The Premier League Storybook | The Team of the 90s ft. Peter Schmeichel

There’s no other place to start with Chapter One of our Premier League storybook… Manchester United claimed the first Premier League title and with it the 1990s.

Without a title since the late 60s, United and their manager Alex Ferguson were under pressure after missing out on the final First Division title to Leeds. After a topsy-turvy start, the shock signing of Leeds talisman Eric Cantona changed it all, and United surged past their rivals to stake their claim as the brand-new Premier League’s team to beat.

In goal, in his second season in English football, was Peter Schmeichel, fresh from winning Euro 92 with a legendary Danish team. He went on to become one of the true legends of the Premier League, but sat down with Jake Humphrey to discuss that first title – which he puts alongside the famous Treble win – and how Ferguson built a side that dominated the decade.

You’ll also hear from some of the game’s other top names about the excitement of the new league, the first ever Premier League title race and, of course, Eric Cantona.
