With the kind of impeccably horrific timing that could only happen in 2020, the kickoff of the new Champions League Group stage coincided with reports that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is in discussions with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United to form a FIFA-backed breakaway European Premier League. Cue an outraged reaction as well as a vibrant opening series of matches last night that showed for now the power is very much with UEFA’s Champions league.
