Throughout our Premier League Storybook, young players helped weave the tales of the last 30 years – idolised by fans after coming through their clubs’ academy. In May 1997, however, one young star burst onto the scene in a way his predecessors never had.
It’s easy to forget the impact a teenage Michael Owen had on English football, but after his first season – not to mention the World Cup – the whole planet was crazy on the Liverpool lad. Jake Humphrey sat down with him to chart that incredible rise and what happened afterwards. We’ll also hear from his teammates at the time, as well as Glenn Hoddle, the manager who oversaw his incredible 1998 World Cup.
