Pochettino’s sack and Mourinho’s developments to the Spurs
Pochettino sacked and Tottenham Hotspur secured their first Premier League away win in 10 months at the London Stadium yesterday, narrowly pipping West Ham United to all three points after running out 3-2 victors. This crucial victory for the Spurs proved to be a great start for Jose Mourinho’s reign. And everyone is interested to see how Spurs will fare under the Portuguese. Although Pascal Chimbonda and the Tottenham board expected a trophy from Pochettino, that boat has long sailed and Mourinho is in to deliver results.Mourinho isn’t particularly keen on possession-styled football, and he is more notorious for a direct style and his sides’ defensive compactness, and Spurs star Heung-Min Son reckons the players won’t have a problem with the long-ball tactics.“But we played well and the lads did a really good job. It’s been a difficult time — we didn’t have a lot of time to prepare. Getting the three points makes us happier…It was a tough week. We had to adapt to new things and a new system, but probably the gaffer will be really happy. We deserved it.”Daniel Levy took the decision to sack Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday evening after five and a half years in charge in North London with Mourinho confirmed as his successor less than a day later. But, like everyone suspects, this won’t be a long term appointment with Mourinho.“I cannot see the plan behind this, it is simply a quick fix. Spurs have panicked because they are worried they won’t qualify for the Champions League next season.“There is no project, there is no plan – it’s simply to get us in the Champions League because we have to balance the books. I just don’t know where this is going with Mourinho.”Potential development for Mourinho would be to replace Hugo Lloris, Tottenham Hotspur’s captain, and would look for a replacement in the transfer market. Indeed, this season Lloris has conceded a whopping 19 in nine games – seven of which came against Bayern Munich. He has kept just one clean sheet in that time, though the defence are evenly to blame for Spurs’ leaky defence.Tottenham bout Lloris for a bargain £7.9million from Lyon in the summer of 2012 and after more than 300 appearances for Tottenham, he has certainly repaid Daniel Levy. The likelihood is that Spurs could still make a profit on Lloris. We can only hope Mourinho delivers consistent results and since he’s off to a great start, we can expect more from the Spurs now.
